A Comprehensive Review of Assassin’s Creed Origins: Unveiling Ancient Egypt’s Secrets

After investing approximately 130 hours in Assassin’s Creed Origins, including the main game and two DLCs, I have finally completed the game with all side quests, outposts, and map objectives cleared. In this review, I will share my thoughts on the game’s mechanics, highlights, and shortcomings.

Gameplay Mechanics: A Mixed Bag

Initially, the game’s pace can be slow, with limited resources and a noticeable level cap. This forces players to clear map objectives to level up and acquire resources. However, as the game progresses, the experience becomes more enjoyable, offering a sense of flexibility and choice.

Highlights: What Sets Assassin’s Creed Origins Apart

1. Unique Art Style

The game’s art style is unparalleled, particularly in the ‘The Curse of the Pharaohs’ DLC, where the afterlife worlds of Tutankhamun and Nefertiti are breathtakingly beautiful.

2. Attention to Detail

The game’s attention to detail is impressive, with NPCs (non-player characters) engaging in daily activities like eating, sleeping, and using the restroom. Additionally, the protagonist, Bayek, will shake off water when exiting the water, and poisoned characters will vomit.

3. Innovative Eagle Vision

The eagle vision mechanic, which allows Bayek to share his eagle companion Senu’s vision, is cleverly designed. This feature simplifies treasure hunting, scouting, and planning assassination routes.

Shortcomings: Areas for Improvement

While the game excels in many areas, it falls short in a few key aspects:

  • Near-combat character movements can feel stiff.
  • Gameplay can become repetitive.
  • The narrative is not particularly outstanding.

Conclusion: Is Assassin’s Creed Origins Worth Playing?

If you’re fascinated by ancient Egyptian history, mythology, pyramids, and pharaonic tombs, Assassin’s Creed Origins is definitely worth playing. Although I may never set foot in the scorching desert or stand atop a pyramid, Ubisoft’s game has given me a glimpse into what it might be like. With a score of 8.5 out of 10, I highly recommend this game to anyone interested in exploring the secrets of ancient Egypt.

  2. I’ve always been fascinated by the symbolism behind ancient Egyptian jewelry, and the game does a great job of incorporating those symbols into the storyline. Do you think the game’s storyline would have been stronger if it had focused more on the cultural significance of the jewelry and accessories?

  3. I’m an archaeology student and I was fascinated by the game’s portrayal of ancient Egyptian culture. The jewelry and headdresses in the game are so intricately designed – did the game’s designers consult with any historians or archaeologists to get the details right?
